The City of Tallahassee, Leon County Government, Neighborhood Medical Center, and Second Harvest of the Big Bend will host a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of a new community food locker on Tuesday, August 5, at 10 a.m. at Neighborhood Medical Center, 2613 South Monroe Street.
Offering free, healthy food for families in need, the commercial-grade food locker can be accessed 24/7, helping make healthy and nutritious food more convenient and accessible to the community.
Second Harvest of the Big Bend, in partnership with the City of Tallahassee and Leon County Government, utilized nearly $275,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to purchase and install four food lockers in neighborhoods with the highest rates of food insecurity. This is the fourth and final food locker to open to the community. Food lockers are also available at Sabal Palm Elementary, Hartsfield Elementary, and Good News Outreach, significantly enhancing food accessibility for families.
Through ongoing support of local non-profit organizations, the City of Tallahassee is strengthening food security by funding food banks, mobile food pantries, and community-based distribution sites that enhance access to healthy, nutritious food in underserved areas. Leon County Government continues to address food security barriers in neighborhoods with the highest food insecurity rates in Leon County through collaborative community partnerships and innovative initiatives, including food distribution for youth at Leon County Public Library locations throughout the year.
